Got yet another in a long line of missives from the Democratic Party. Give these guys a few bucks and they stalk you forever.
It’s a sort of sleazy but gentle form of good-cop/bad-cop, with friendly little notes from Barack and Michelle –– they sign their first names so I guess we’re on a first-names basis –– asking for three or five bucks –– they can’t seem to make up their minds –– and worrisome letters from various party officials warning me of the nefarious things the Republicans are up to.
I keep telling them it’s not going to work with me but that doesn’t stop them. I have the distinct feeling that they don’t read the return mail.
I have the distinct feeling they also don’t read or understand their own polls, either. Or the message boards on various ‘progressive’ sites, where the rhetoric is getting angrier and less rational as we go along. They are losing millions of votes. One would think that would alarm the re-election committee or someone, but if it does the word is not getting through to the President.
This morning’s warning was all about what the G.O.P. will do to women if Obama is not returned to office. Apparently, there will be rape and pillaging, bodies lying everywhere. The letter, from Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who has written before, warns that the Republicans are threatening this week to not reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act because its language protects lesbians, gay men, undocumented immigrants, and so forth.
How the Violence Against Women Act protects gay men is not made clear. Also, why does it require reauthorization every year, as this one has since 1994? Debbie is a little short on the details.
Please don’t misunderstand me. I am happy to sign on to any act which has such a noble title. But I’m a little suspicious of titles since Congress starting passing atrocities such as the ‘Clean Air Initiative’ to assist polluters and the ‘Patriot Act’ to enable police state operations.
Also, if this administration were really concerned about violence against women, it might be a little less active in raining violence down on women (and men) everywhere. To quote Martin Luther King, Jr., my government is (still) “the greatest purveyor of violence in the world.”
The bogeyman now is the Republican ‘war on women,’ a bunch of idiotic initiatives the G.O.P. is apparently happy to engage in out of the Pleistocene Age. Happily, it is likely that most women will punish them at the ballot box.
The ‘war on women’ is of course nothing new. It’s just a manifestation of the reactionary ‘social conservatism’ that the right wing has been pushing for years, only now the Democrats have finally listened to George Lakoff and begun framing the thing better.
In my opinion, the people running this country have been running a war against women, children, gays, minorities, and the poor, for a couple of hundred years. Sometimes they have to retrench but the truth of it is always there in some form or other. The Democrats are generally more subtle. They also screw the poor, which necessarily includes a large proportion of single mothers and kids, blacks, Native Americans, and Latinos, but they pretend otherwise.
The legislation he authored to ‘reform’ welfare caused enormous privation and misery, yet Bill Clinton is still regarded as a ‘liberal’ success story.
The biggest shafting of ordinary Americans in the nation’s history was the bank bailout, done under Bush, but actively supported by Barack Obama and rammed through Congress by Nancy Pelosi and Happy Harry Reid.
The worst violence in the world is being done under a Democratic President, whose remote-control murders are more than five-times greater than those committed by George Bush the younger.
But the Democrats want my support to stave off the Republican hordes. It is to laugh. It is to weep.
Got a decent human being running for Congress in my district. He’s the underdog, of course, not having sucked up a lot of corporate cash, but he stands a chance. I’ll be happy to vote for him in June and, with any luck, November. But I’m done voting for phonies and liars. Every time I do, I end up with these e-mails from people like Debbie and Barack.
